The Online Venue will be home to approximately 260 different exhibitors from both Japan and abroad. When a visitor enters the online venue space, the first thing to come to view will be six vegetable icons โ Potato, Carrot, Turnip, Onion, Garlic, and Radish โ which represent the different zones of the Online Venue. (…) We spraken voor opening met Rob Moonen, initiator en coรถrdinator van het PARK, een initiatief dat zeven jaar geleden is opgericht. Ontstaan uit nood en het ontbreken van een kunstplatform in de stad. “We zijn in een gat gesprongen. Nu zijn we eigenlijk terug bij af omdat de provincie vindt dat we goed bezig zijn maar er geen geld meer voor (over) heeft.(…) Normaal gesproken is de ruimte helemaal leeg. Kunstenaars krijgen een budget, om in te richten en hierheen te reizen. Het is een museale ruimte maar ze mogen ermee doen wat ze willen. “We willen worden verrast, want daarmee verras je ook het publiek”, zegt Rob. Nu staan er diverse wanden, speciaal neergezet voor de expo die morgen van start gaat. 138 kunstenaars hebben hier twee werken hangen, of staan. Want ook sculpturen zijn te zien. “Iedereen moet een stap terugdoen met corona, ook kunstenaars die het vaak al niet breed hebben. Dus hebben we de zomerperiode, die we normaal zouden invullen met een residentie van een internationale kunstenaar, nu hiermee ingevuld. To honor and enhance the fundamental role of photobooks in the dissemination and development of the photographic language, Photo Vogue Festival is introducing a new section dedicated to this unique form of artistic expression. In line with the theme of the 2019 edition โA Glitch in the System, deconstructing stereotypesโ, 28 photobooks have been selected by the Vogue Italia team and will be exhibited at Base Milano from 14th to 17th November 2019.

The EDIT10N TAUBE PICNIC WORLD TOUR comes to Rotterdam! Armed with a dedicated picnic blanket we have gone on tour to organise casual, open air events with publishers and artists around the world, celebrating our 10 year anniversary. Now we are coming to Rotterdam to hang out with the PrintRoom team, Fucking Good Art (Rob Hamelijnck and Nienke Terpsma) and Chantal Rens who has created a special artistsโ edition picnic blanket!
On this occasion Edition Taube and PrintRoom will launch Hoe je boeken steelt, the latest, revised version of David Horvitzโs How to Shoplift Books. This practical, inventive and funny guide for the aspiring bibliophile-kleptomaniac was originally published in 2013.
For Hoe je boeken steelt, weโve adapted the original to the Dutch context and added some extra techniques for robbing, stealing and looting printed matter. Itโs probably the last book youโll buy. The book will be available during the picnic (price: โฌ9,99, a steal in itself).

Op uitnodiging van citybooks / deBuren verbleef ik afgelopen zomer 2 weken in Leeuwarden. Het resultaat is Review Leeuwarden: een mix van analoge collages, snapshots, readymades en knipsels uit Huis-aan-Huis Leeuwarden en de Leeuwarder Courant. Uit de snapshots is o.a. een memory spel ontstaan.
Ook te zien; op Leeuwarden geรฏnspireerde beelden gemaakt door Anne Margot Stapert en te horen; verhalen van Irakese filmmaker en schrijver Hassan Blasim, de Vlaamse schrijver Erik Vlaminck, de New Yorkse Latasha N. Nevada Diggs en Leeuwarder schrijver Arjan Hut.

Chantal Rensโ Common Sense is a Hungry Bitch is a hardbound book of Rensโ subtly surreal collages. Chantal Rens is in de traditie van de ‘boekkunst’ aan het uitgroeien tot een begrip. Het traditionele medium van het boek als beeldend kunstwerk heeft in de jaren zestig en zeventig van de vorige eeuw een bloeiperiode gekend. Gelukkig is er een aantal kunstenaars dat het boek als een persoonlijk beeld blijft hanteren. In Nederland is Chantal Rens wat dat betreft een fenomeen. Haar werk kan worden bekeken in de traditie die is begonnen met boeken als ‘Twentysix Gasoline Stations’ (1962) en ‘Various Small Fires and Milk’ (1964) van Edward Ruscha (1937) die later in zijn loopbaan furore maakte met monumentale woordschilderijen in het zelf ontworpen lettertype Boy Scout Utility Modern.
De boeken en andere werken in gedrukte vorm die Chantal Rens maakt, bestaan meestal uit series van samenhangende beelden die ze bewerkt tot reeksen collages. Ze maakt uitsnedes in gevonden (foto)grafisch materiaal, en vult die op met verwante beelddetails uit andere vondsten uit tijdschriften, albums, massadrukwerk et cetera. Door regelmatig zwart-wit materiaal te combineren met fragmenten in kleur, bereikt ze een tijdloze sfeer waarin de kwetsbare verhouding mens – dier – landschap centraal staat.
Sinds 2015 onderhoudt Chantal Rens de Facebookpagina ‘Cats and Dogs in the Window’, waarop ze dagelijks een foto plaatst van een kat of een hond die achter een raam, meestal op de vensterbank van een huis, naar buiten kijkt. Chantal Rens maakt die foto’s vaak zelf waarbij het haar niet gaat om de fotografische kwaliteit van het beeld, maar om het fenomeen als zodanig. Dat neemt niet weg dat door de letterlijke voorbijgaande aard van de fotografische beelden deze een bepaalde visuele kwaliteit verwerven. Door de toenemende hoeveelheid ontstaat een iconografie waardoor de symbolische betekenis van iedere afzonderlijke foto meer en meer aan uiteenlopende interpretaties bloot komt te staan. De foto’s zijn ontroerend, aandoenlijk, grappig, bizar, gewoon, liefdevol, vanzelfsprekend, onverwacht enzovoort. Bij tijd en wijle verzamelt Chantal Rens een reeks van deze foto’s in een publicatie waarvan inmiddels vier delen zijn verschenen.
